Muhammadiyah and Vaccines: Religious Harmony, Science, and Humanity

In the age of the coronavirus outbreak, scholars are working to form a vaccine like a cure for this problem. Related to body vaccines, various scholars although the Islamic section in Indonesia sometimes has a twilight containing the view of the law. The difference in formulation and the vaccine law arises because of the real and negative side that is mixed in the vaccine itself. The question is how does Muhammadiyah look at vaccines?

Based on the editorial search, fatwas on vaccine rules have been discussed by the Tarjih Assembly in 2009. In the official website of the tarjih.or.id, explained, the vaccine is an antigen compound made from microbes that have been turned off or weakened. Basically, the vaccine serves to increase the order of hypocrisy (immunity) in the body of microbes, which is usually done in children, toddlers, along with pregnant women. “It is narrated from Jabir, to the Prophet (peace be upon him), that he said: Every problem has a cure, and to the extent that the problem has been antidoteed, in order to be healthy by allah.” [HR. Muslim, Ahmad then an-Nasai]

عَنْ أَبِي الدَّرْدَاءِ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِنَّ اللهَ أَنْزَلَ الدَّاءَ وَالدَّوَاءَ وَجَعَلَ لِكُلِّ دَاءٍ دَوَاءً فَتَدَاوَوْا وَلاَ تَدَاوَوْا بِحَرَامٍ

It means: “Narrated Abu Darda’, sira said: The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Verily Allah has overthrown the complexity and then the drug. Again make for every complication want the drug. Then you should seek treatment, but do not seek treatment with an illegal entity.” [HR. Abu Dawud]

From the exploration of postulates together, muhammadiyah fatwa summarizes that people must always keep individuals from being contaminated with problems that can damage their bodies, then should have treatment if suffering from pain, as long as they do not seek treatment with illegal objects.

In conclusion, it is understandable that Muhammadiyah approved/published polio vaccination which suppresses the enzyme trypsin starting from pig animals. As recorded containing tarjih.or.id, so far as no other vaccine that is free begins with the enzyme, Muhammadiyah daim approves the use of the enzyme tripsin starting pigs.
